ORION TWP. (WWJ) -- A Clarkston man is in stable condition after being injured in a trench collapse Wednesday morning at a new subdivision under construction.

The incident, in Orion Township, marks the second trench collapse in Oakland County within a 24-hour period.

The Oakland County Sheriff's Office said deputies and the Orion Township Fire Department responded at around 9:40 a.m. to the southeast corner of Squirrel Rd. and Silverbell Rd. on reports of a worker trapped in a trench.

A preliminary investigation on the scene found that a subcontracted excavation company was digging for a sanitary sewer installation within the new residential development.

The 25-year-old worker was inside a trench box when the surrounding ground gave way, trapping him below the waist.

The OCSO Search and Rescue Team and the Oakland County Technical Rescue Team were dispatched to the scene.

However, coworkers and first responders managed to safely free the man before the specialized rescue teams arrived, prompting their response to be canceled.

The worker suffered injuries to both of his legs, officials said.

He was transported by the Orion Township Fire Department to McLaren Oakland Hospital, where he was listed stable condition while receiving treatment, early Wednesday afternoon.

The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) responded to the site and is investigating.

The incident follows a similar rescue on Tuesday, where a 35-year-old Ira Township man was freed after becoming buried during a trench collapse at a construction site in neighboring Oxford Township.
