SOUTHGATE, Mich. (WWJ) -- Police in Southgate have released video footage of the aftermath of an incident at a Tim Hortons in which an employee threw hot coffee at a customer.
The dispute started as an argument over the customer’s order and eventually led to a lawsuit against Tim Hortons.
Dusty Jackson of Lincoln Park is suing the restaurant chain, claiming a 16-year-old employee threw coffee in her face shortly before 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 30 while she was in the drive-thru at the Northline Road location.
Police have released body camera footage of an officer speaking with Jackson in the moments after the incident.
WARNING: The following video contains explicit language.
Jackson and her boyfriend, who is also seen in the video, say while she sustained minor burns in the incident, they weren’t severe, or “scalding burns,” as he describes them.
Jackson tells the officer she pulled up to the window and she had decided she wanted to add an order of 10 Timbits -- bite-sized “donut holes” -- but the employee denied her request, saying it was company policy that they are not allowed to add items to an order at the window.

Jackson admits to the officer she “griped” about the policy, saying “what do you mean? That’s some bull**** -- why can’t I add 10 Timbits? You haven’t even given me my change back.”
Jackson said the employee told her they were “on a timer.”
“I get that,” Jackson says she replied. “Don’t you think that’s kind of f****d up?”
After a brief discussion and argument, in which another employee tried to restrain the one at the window, Jackson says the employee slammed the window shut, to which she said “what a b****.”
That’s when the employee allegedly opened the window and threw the coffee at Jackson. Jackson says other employees were telling her not to throw it.
The incident is still under investigation and Tim Hortons has not commented on the lawsuit, citing ongoing litigation. Details of the lawsuit have not been made public.
