Oakland University professors hit picket line over contract dispute on first day of classes

ROCHESTER (WWJ) -- Professors at Oakland University may not be in classrooms on the first day of class because of failed contract negotiations.

The contract for the 880 faculty members of the Oakland University Chapter of the American Association of University Professors expired at midnight, and negotiators have failed to reach an agreement on a new deal, despite talking until around 1 a.m.

The university is telling students to go to class as scheduled and wait at least 15 minutes to determine whether their instructor will be teaching.

Students may also contact their instructors in advance to determine whether classes will be taking place.

Meanwhile, university operations, support services, and extracurricular activities will proceed as normal.

The union filed an unfair labor practice charge regarding the Oakland's failure to bargain the impact of the COVID vaccine mandate on union members.

In a statement, Oakland University said it regrets that this faculty union strike is taking place and hopes to resolve remaining contract issues as soon as possible with minimal disruption to classes.

WWJ's Charlie Langton reports that OU professors will be holding an "informational picket" beginning at 8 a.m. on Thursday, while talks are set to resume at 10 a.m.
