ISHPEMING (WWJ) – Michigan State Police say a student has died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound at a school while a trooper was giving a presentation to other students.
MSP officials said the incident happened Tuesday afternoon at Aspen Ridge School, a K-8 school, in Marquette County's Ishpeming Township in the Upper Peninsula.
Troopers were dispatched to the school around 12:30 p.m. for an incident involving a student with a firearm.
The trooper who was giving the presentation in a different part of the school immediately responded, official said, and found the boy in a bathroom with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The trooper immediately rendered first aid as additional patrol units and EMS personnel responded to the scene.
The student was taken to a hospital in Marquette, where he succumbed to his injuries.
MSP will not release the student's name. It was not immediately clear how old the student was.
The school was placed on lockdown during the incident, and law enforcement have since searched the school and determined it was an isolated incident involving one student. There was no threat to other students or the public at the time of the incident, MSP said.
It's not clear at this time where the child got the gun. Authorities are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
In a statement, MSP is asking people to "keep the sensitive nature of this incident and the feelings of this young person's family in your thoughts and prayers."
The entire NICE Community Schools district has canceled classes on Wednesday due to the incident.
