Suspect arrested for antisemitic vandalism at Oak Park synagogue

Rabbi Robert gamer speaks to WWJ about the graffiti found at Congregation Beth Shalom,

Charlie Langton

OAK PARK (WWJ) -- One person has been taken into custody connection with antisemitic vandalism at a local synagogue.

The Oak Park Department of Public Safety on Thursday said they have identified and arrested a suspect in connection with the graffiti at Congregation Beth Shalom.

Investigators said they used video footage to identify the suspect as someone who is known to frequent the area.

A swastika and other anti-Jewish symbols were painted on the building, likely early Wednesday morning.

"I'm upset. I'm saddened also that somebody has that amount of hatred in them to do something like this," Rabbi Robert Gamer told WWJ's Charlie Langton. "You know, this is a message. This is right outside our front door."

Patrols were increased around houses of worship, schools and parks out of an abundance of caution.

There is no further information at this time about the person who was arrested, with expected charges pending.

In a separate incident earlier this week, two men from out of state were arrested after they allegedly spray-painting multiple swastikas and other hate-speech on a residential fence in Sterling Heights.
