DETROIT (WWJ) – An investigation is underway after a road rage suspect fired shots at an off-duty Detroit police officer on I-94 Monday afternoon, according to Michigan State Police.
The incident unfolded around 12:30 p.m. on westbound I-94 near Gratiot when MSP officials received reports of shots fired on the freeway.
The 22-year-old officer was driving west from Vernier with a passenger when the suspect "began road raging with him" by throwing bottles and objects at his vehicle, MSP officials said.
At some point near Gratiot, the victim "heard a pop" and subsequently discovered his vehicle had been hit by gunfire, officials said.
The suspect then exited at Gratiot. Authorities did not say what type of car the suspect was driving and no description of the suspect was immediately given.
No one was injured in the incident and the off-duty officer did not fire his weapon, according to MSP.
"There is absolutely no reason to get that upset while driving to throw items at another car or even worse, fire a gun at someone." MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw said on Twitter. "We were lucky no one was hit and our goal now will be to get this person off our roads and the gun out of their hands."
The freeway had been shut down at Outer Drive/Chalmers for the investigation, but reopened around 3:45 p.m. Traffic remained heavy after reopening.
Troopers are still investigating the shooting.
