DETROIT (WWJ) -- Speed and drunken driving were factors in a crash that left two teenagers dead and third critically injured in Detroit, according to police.
Detroit Police Deputy Chief Kari Sloan said a teen boy and a teen girl were both killed when their Dodge Charger slammed into a car and then into the Prince Liquor Store on Gratiot Ave. and Harper, early Monday morning.
Sloan said the Charger was headed northbound on Gratiot, and the other car was southbound on Gratiot.
"What occurred is the vehicle, which was a silver BMW, went to make a left-hand turn and was struck by the Dodge Charger," she said.
Sloan said an investigation found the teen behind the wheel of the Charger was speeding at the time of the deadly crash.
"We do know that the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed at this moment in the investigation," said Sloan, updating reporters on the case. "We're not able to say exactly how fast, but we do know it was excessive."
Two of the teens in the Charger, which was pinned against the liquor store building, were dead on the scene. A teen girl in the Charger was taken to a hospital where she was listed in critical condition, Sloan said.
Sloan said the Charger was so damaged that they weren't to tell whether anyone was wearing a seatbelt.
The man who was driving the BMW was arrested following the crash. He was not injured.
Sloan said investigators believe the man had been drinking.
"It's a terrible situation," Sloan said. "The vehicle was traveling way too fast, and the driver of the BMW was intoxicated. So, we know that those too things combined, you know, if's very deadly."
