STERLING HEIGHTS (WWJ) A fiery crash killed two people in Sterling Heights.

Sterling Heights Police said they received a call of a crash involving multiple cars on Schoenherr Road and 15 Mile on Saturday, April 12, around 6:15 p.m.

Callers told police the crash caused one vehicle to break out into flames, and another to roll over.

When they arrived, police said they found a gray Ford Bronco fully engulfed in fire. The driver, a 78-year-old Sterling Heights woman, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of a white Ford Taurus-- a 34-year-old Sterling Heights man-- was also pronounced dead at the scene.

According to police, a 56-year-old Oklahoma man in a blue Dodge Durango was injured while trying to extricate himself after his car rolled over. The fire department treated him at the scene before he was taken to the hospital.

A 33-year-old from Sterling Heights who witnessed the crash was also hurt helping the driver get out of the Bronco that was on fire.

Police said the Good Samaritan and the driver of the Durango were both taken to the hospital with injuries described as "non-life-threatening."

In total, six cars were involved in the crash; police said.

The other drivers and bystanders were treated and released at the scene, according to police.

Police investigation suggests the crash happened when the Taurus, at a high rate of speed, rear-ended the Bronco, thrusting it into the traffic of the 15 Mile and Schoenherr intersection. A total of four additional vehicles were struck by either the Bronco or the Taurus.

The names of the victims have not been released.

The crash remains under investigation. Investigators are unsure if drug or alcohol use are factors. Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call Officer S. Palmer of the Traffic Safety Bureau at (586) 446-2920 and give the case number  25-25995.
