DETROIT (WWJ) - A plane that was enroute to Detroit Metro Airport had to be diverted to Canada on Friday, officials said, due to an emergency situation involving an unruly passenger.

Authorities with the Stephenville Dymond International Airport in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada confirmed to WXYZ that Delta Flight DL097 was bound for Detroit from Paris, France, but landed on Canadian soil instead due to an incident onboard.

The captain aboard the Delta flight had radioed ahead and notified authorities about an "emergency" around 12:33 p.m. local Canadian time, the official added.

The unruly passenger, described by authorities as a 34-year-old American man, had to be restrained by airline personnel, but he managed to break free. Half a dozen other passengers stepped in and jumped on the man, officials added, and they were able to subdue him until the flight landed in Canada.

The man was arrested by Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Customs agents.

According to FlightAware, the Delta Flight 97 took off at 1:58PM NDT and is expected to arrive at DTW at 3:23 p.m., almost two hours behind schedule.
