WARREN (WWJ) – A 28-year-old Detroit man accused of robbing two dollar stores in Warren has been arrested after leading police on a chase that ended in Eastpointe Wednesday afternoon.
While the suspect’s name has not yet been released, Warren police officials said he may be involved in several other similar robberies across Metro Detroit.
It all began around 3:20 p.m. Wednesday when Warren police officers were called to the Dollar General store at Van Dyke and Martin on a reported robbery. Store employees told police the suspect, described as a Black man, took money and fled the scene.
As police were investigating, they got another call about 15 minutes reporting a robbery at a Dollar General only about a mile away near Hoover and Martin.
Authorities quickly determined the same suspect was involved in both robberies, as a black Chrysler 300 was seen leaving both scenes.
Officers soon spotted the car, later confirmed to be stolen out of Southfield, in the area of Schoenherr and Leisure. As police tried to stop the suspect, he fled and led police on a chase through Warren and Eastpointe.
WWJ Traffic tipsters reported seeing the vehicle cut through a gas station parking lot.
After about 15 minutes, the suspect crashed into an uninvolved car near the intersection of Gratiot and 9 Mile, causing major damage and non-serious injuries, according to police.
The suspect then tried to run from the scene, but he was tracked down and arrested in the parking lot of East Detroit High School, thanks to the use of a K9 unit.
Authorities found evidence from the Dollar General robberies inside the Chrysler.
Warren police are still investigating and working with other jurisdictions to confirm his involvement in other robberies across the area.
Officials said they plan on releasing video of the incident on Thursday and more details will be released once charges are authorized and arraignment information is known.
