He was placed on a ventilator in the Neurological ICU at University of Michigan Hospital with no feeling from his neck down, “fighting for his life.” His wife, Holli, and their 7-year-old son, Jack, remain by his side.

Officer Nick Kott played, coached and refereed hockey throughout his lifetime. Jack, “eager to follow in his father’s footsteps”, plays on the Lakeland Hawks youth hockey team, police said.

“For the Kott family, hockey is more than a sport. It is a passion, a bond, a tradition,” Warren Police said in a press release.

The department banded together to "honor Nick's spirit" and to support Jack as faced off against the the Trenton Titans on Friday night. Over forty officers and dispatchers, on their own time, filled the stands at the Mount Clemens Ice Arena. They cheered for Jack when he and his team secured a victory.
