WASHTENAW COUNTY (WWJ) -- A corrections officer was rushed to the hospital on Wednesday after being attacked by an inmate in the Washtenaw County jail.
According to the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office, the senior corrections officer was “seriously assaulted” in the medical unit at about 5 p.m. and then taken to the hospital, where he is said to be in stable condition and receiving treatment.
Michigan State Police are currently investigating the incident and the perpetrator was moved to another facility to await new charges relating to the assault, said authorities.
Mlive reported that the Washtenaw County Sheriff, Jerry Clayton said this incident was a "sobering reminder" of the "challenging circumstances and danger" that people in police services and corrections face in their service.
“They serve without much fanfare and acknowledgement. As a result, Washtenaw County is a better place live," said Clayton.
The officer’s name has not been released.
