PONTIAC (WWJ) — A young Waterford man could spend up to two decades behind bars after being charged with a series of sexual assault cases involving underage victims.
Authorities on Tuesday announced additional charges against 21-year-old Logan Sutherland, who the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office says “used his position as a trusted adult to sexually abuse young boys.”
Sutherland was arrested at his Waterford home in late August after Waterford police detectives investigated a complaint involving a 10-year-old boy. Police officials said at the time Sutherland had spent time alone with the boy on as many as 30-40 occasions between 2021 and 2023.
Waterford police announced initial charges on Aug. 31.
After he was arrested investigators found photos and videos of naked young boys on Sutherland’s phone and three more victims came forward.
Officials said victims in the case were assaulted at several locations in Waterford, including Sutherland’s home, Zap Zone and Sportway — both family entertainment venues with attractions such as laser tag and go-karts — and SkyZone in Commerce Township, a trampoline park.
Waterford police officials said all four victims in this case knew Sutherland and he “has befriended parents with young boys, gained their confidence, and used their trust to spend time alone and sexually assault the children.”
Police officials said at the time the images on his phone depicted several unidentified young boys aside from those who had come forward. Police are asking anyone who has children that may have spent time with Sunderland to call Detective Rachel White at 248-618-6122.
After Wednesday’s additional charges, Sutherland now faces eight felony counts, including four counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct, three counts of aggravated possession of child sexually abusive material and one count of child sexually abusive activity.
He remains held at the Oakland County Jail on previously issued charges.
“This defendant took advantage of vulnerable children and parents,” Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said in a press release. “I applaud the immense bravery of those victims who have come forward. Sexual assault cases, particularly involving children, are among the most traumatic cases my office handles. These cases are being handled by a dedicated Assistant Prosecutor with my office’s Special Victims Unit (SVU) and we are devoted to working to secure justice for the victims, their families, and the community.”
The prosecutor’s office says “we strongly encourage survivors or anyone with information to contact their local law enforcement agency.”
