SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) -- It may be the middle of April, but the snow was flying in Metro Detroit Monday, creating slushy road conditions.
A Winter Weather Advisory expired at 7 p.m. for most of Southeast Michigan, with several locales seeing some accumulating snow. In the Thumb, including Huron, Tuscola and Sanilac Counties, an advisory that was scheduled to last until 4 a.m. Tuesday has been canceled.
The snow began arriving around midday and continued through the afternoon hours, with some rain mixing in.
The highest reported snowfall total in Metro Detroit was three inches in West Bloomfield, while Detroit Metro Airport, Wyandotte and Howell all saw 2.5 inches. Rochester Hills saw two inches, while the rest of the area saw an inch or less.
Temperatures started around the 40s and then dropped down into the mid- to upper 30s for the majority of the afternoon.
"It's gonna be a messy afternoon," AccuWeather Meteorologist Dean DeVore said on WWJ earlier in the day.
He noted that the snow will "really be coming down" because of the intensity of low pressure that's coming through the area.
The NWS warned that bursts of snow could cause hazardous travel at times.
That was evident throughout the afternoon, as there were several crashes on Metro Detroit freeways, including a jackknifed semi that left I-94 closed for more than five hours.
While the crash itself had cleared, the freeway remained closed in the area as of 9:30 p.m., for what appeared to be a police investigation.
DeVore said drivers in Metro Detroit should anticipate problems with travel during the afternoon and into the evening, as there will be poor visibility along with slushy, wet roads.
And as the temps drop down into the low to mid-30s later Monday night, DeVore said to watch out for some slick spots.
For Tuesday afternoon, DeVore says Metro Detroit will be up into the mid-40s with breaks in the clouds for some sunshine.
Michigan State Police has chimed in on the weather forecast for this week, saying it's a "weather forecaster's dream," with snow, rain and mild temperatures. They're telling Metro Detroiters to remember to have snow scrapers, sunglasses, umbrellas and sunscreen on hand -- just in case.
