CENTER LINE (WWJ) -- A young Detroit woman is facing charges in Macomb County, after police say she crashed her car into a home, seriously injuring a 9-year-old girl who was asleep in her bed.
The Macomb County Prosecutor's Office has charged 20-year-old Caris Wade with two five-year felony counts in connection with the incident at Kramer Homes, early Monday morning.
Prosecutors say Wade was behind the wheel of a white Chevy Trax when she crashed through a wall of the home, driving directly into a bedroom where a 9-year-old girl and her 22-month-old sister were sleeping.
The 9-year-old. who was pushed out into the yard upon impact, was rushed to a hospital for treatment of three spinal injuries, a fractured nose, and a liver laceration, according to a Gofundme for the family. She remains hospitalized.
Fortunately, the baby was unharmed.
Wade allegedly fled the scene on foot but was arrested a short time later by Warren Police.
She is charged with: Reckless Driving Causing Serious Impairment Of A Body Function, Failure To Stop At Scene Of Accident Resulting In Serious Impairment Or Death.
Wade's bond was set at $200,000 at an arraignment in 37th District Court on Tuesday. If she does post bond, she must wear a GPS and alcohol tether.
Meanwhile, it's still unclear if Wade was drunk or what else may have led to the crash.
The MCPO said toxicology results to determine if Wade was under the influence are still pending. If she was drinking, more charges could be added in this case.
Prosecutor Pete Lucido said, in a statement: “This could have been worse than what it already is for this family! Reckless driving, or drunk driving, crashing into residences and then fleeing from law enforcement will not be tolerated in Macomb County! We are committed to pursuing justice swiftly for this family and to the full extent of the law without exception.”
Wade’s next scheduled court date is Probable Cause Conference on Oct. 22.
