NOVI (WWJ) -- Michigan State Police are investigating a deadly crash involving a wrong way driver on I-96 in Oakland County.
Several people called 911 to report a wrong way driver on eastbound I-96 near Novi Road around 2:45 Sunday morning. Shortly after there was a head-on crash involving two vehicles.
The at-fault driver was pronounced dead at the hospital. He's 31-years old, but his name hasn't been released.
The second driver was also taken to the hospital and is in serious condition. That person had two dogs in their car and those pets were also killed.
State Police say it's unknown if drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash, but Michigan State Police 1st Lt. Mike Shaw tells WWJ's Mike Campbell that it's likely give the area in which the crash occured.
“That’s a pretty straight-open stretch fo freeway there, so it’d be pretty tough for somebody not under the influence or not paying attention to actually go the wrong way in the that area,” Lt. Shaw said.
Investigators will be inspecting the vehicles involved.
