DETROIT (WWJ) - The driver of a truck is in police custody after police allege the driver purposely drove the wrong way down Woodward Avenue and struck another car head-on before ramming into a building Monday afternoon.
As reported by WXYZ, surveillance video caught the crash as the driver of a red truck drove down the opposite side of the road into oncoming traffic on Woodward near 7 Mile in Detroit after 1 p.m.
The driver of the truck proceeded to plow into a white sedan and crashed into a building and flipping over.
Detroit Police Commander Kurt Worboys said to WXYZ they believe the crash was the result of a road rage incident that started in Palmer Park and ended up with the truck driver chasing the white sedan.
Worboys said the truck driver turned around on Woodward and began driving on the wrong side of the road before intentionally colliding into the white car, the force of which sent the truck into a building.
“I thought the building was going down,” said business owner Hassan Fayad, CEO of 411 Therapy, to WXYZ.
Employees at a nearby car wash said they heard what appeared to be gunshots before the crash, but Detroit police said they don't believe shots were fired.
Surveillance video that caught the crash showed two people crawling out from the truck shortly after the crash; both the driver of the truck and the white sedan were arrested by police.
“It’s a terrible way of trying to resolve your issues,” said Worboys said of the alleged road rage incident.
A second crash was reported on the same stretch of Woodward, not far from the scene of the head-on collision; Worboys said that incident was caused by drivers gawking at the crash between the white sedan and the truck.
No further details were made available by police. It is unclear what charged the drivers of both vehicles will face.
It is unknown if the people involved in the first and second crashes sustained any injuries.
