(WWJ) From presidential politics, to freeway crashes, to crime — it was a busy year for news in Metro Detroit and across the state. Here are some of the top most-clicked on local news stories covered by WWJ Newsradio 950 in 2024.

5. More than two dozen removed from Wolverines season opener: Security kicked more than two dozen football fans out of the season opener for the University of Michigan Wolverines, against the Fresno State Bulldogs, at the Big House in Ann Arbor on August 31. Ten of them were removed for disorderly conduct. (More details)

4. Contractor killed after coming into contact with overhead equipment, causing electrical fire in Northern Macomb County: On September 12, a 61-year-old man was killed on the job after while doing work for DTE Energy, leading to a massive electrical fire and emergency response in Northern Macomb County. A DTE spokesperson said the contractor "came into contact with overhead equipment and was fatally wounded." (Full story)

Trump plan to eliminate US Education Department would be devastating for Michigan students, Michigan Education Association says: The future of the US Department of Education is uncertain, after President-elect Donald Trump ran on a promise to eliminate the department. In an interview with WWJ's Dan Jenkins, Thomas Morgan, spokesperson for the MEA said such a move would have wide-ranging ramifications for Michigan students. (Read more)

Michigan deer hunter calls 911 on 'suspicious' man near his ATV who turned out to be subject of active manhunt: An early morning encounter between a hunter and a fugitive on the opening day of firearm deer season in Michigan led to a man’s arrest. Officers from multiple agencies responded, and a 28-year-old Battle Creek man was ultimately taken into custody. (Full story)

Driver dead after rear-ending Michigan State Police car on I-75, crushing it into semi: On September 13, a Motor Carrier officers with the Michigan State Police was rushed to a hospital after a tragic crash that left a patrol car crushed along I-75 in Lincoln Park. The driver who rear-ended the officer's car was killed, and Officer Daniel Kerstetter, a 45-year-old father of three, later died of his injuries.
