WYANDOTTE (WWJ) – Wyandotte Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Catherine Cost has resigned following a wave of public backlash over the installation of a 5G cell tower at an elementary school in the district.

Cost announced her resignation at a Board of Education meeting Wednesday night.

Parents, members of the medical community, and local politicians have expressed outrage over the last few weeks after the installation of the cell tower at Washington Elementary.

The district made a deal in 2018 with T-Mobile, allowing the company to build the tower on top of the school. In exchange, the district is set to receive a little more than $1,000 a month from T-Mobile.

The pushback against the district stemmed from a combination of health and safety concerns, as well as an alleged lack of transparency from the district.

Some parents have voiced concerns their kids will be exposed to radiation with the tower sitting on top of the school, while others are weary of the large generator accompanying the tower near the school's playground.

While the tower has not been activated, it remains in place, despite a series of protests and contentious board meetings. District officials have maintained the tower is safe.
