Police in Colorado are "on the hunt" for suspects who allegedly threw a large rock at a woman's vehicle, killing her. They think it could be part of a crime pattern.
According to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, 20-year-old Alexa Bartell of Arvada, Colo., was driving a Chevy Spark northbound near the 10600 block of Indiana St. at around 10:45 p.m. Wednesday when the suspects struck her.
"In the moments before she was killed, Alexa was on her phone talking to a friend when the phone went silent," said authorities. "Alexa's friend tracked her phone and drove to the location on Indiana St. She found Alexa fatally wounded inside her car, which was off the roadway in a field."
The attack that killed Bartell "appears to be part of an overnight crime series possibly involving a light-colored pickup truck or SUV," the Sheriff's office said. It listed five incidents from 10:04 p.m. through 10:45 p.m. that were related to rocks thrown through vehicle windows and has created a map of the incidents.
Bartell was the only reported fatality as of Friday. Two other drivers sustained minor injuries due to the attacks, and other vehicles were damaged.
"We are working with Boulder County Sheriff's Office, Arvada Police and Westminster Police to gather information," said the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office. "We believe there may be more victims."
Authorities are asking for the publics help to identify the perpetrators of the crimes.
"If you were in any of these areas and witnessed anything related to the suspect vehicle or the suspects who may have been inside, call the JCSO tip line at 303-271-5612," the sheriff's office said. "No piece of information is insignificant. We want to hear from you if you have home security or dash cameras that may have caught the vehicle driving by."
