17 people shot, 4 dead as N.O. moves into Phase II reopening

It has been a violent four days in New Orleans as the city reopens more businesses in Phase II recovery from COVID-19.

On Saturday New Orleans entered Phase II allowing Casinos and bars to reopen and other Phase I businesses are able to increase to their capacity to 50%. However, the move to a more normal environment in the city also brings with it, three homicides and several other people injured in four separate shootings.

Thursday

1 female shot

It started Thursday June 11, when NOPD responded to a shooting that occurred in the 300 block of Loyola Avenue in Duncan Plaza. A woman was shot in the chest just feet away from a huge crowd of “defund police” protesters gathered in Duncan Plaza. Her condition is unknown.

Friday

1 male dead

On Friday June 13, around 12:37 a.m., NOPD officers in New Orleans East responded to reports of an aggravated battery by shooting in the 7100 block of Downman Road. When officers arrived they found one adult male suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The victim was pronounced dead on scene by EMS.

Saturday

1 female dead

The NOPD is also investigating a homicide that claimed the life of one adult female Saturday June 13, on the on South I-10 Service Road in New Orleans East.

Seventh District officers responded to an aggravated battery by shooting around 9:48 p.m. Upon arrival, officers discovered one female suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The victim was pronounced deceased on scene by EMS.

2 teens shot

It happened in the 6500 block of I-10 Service Road. NOPD say two teens were arguing with someone when a third person shot them. Their condition is unknown.

1 male shot

A man was shot while driving on Earhart Boulevard near South Tonti Street. Police say he was shot in the right shoulder.

A 17-year old was shot while driving near Franklin and North Claiborne Avenue. He was taken to a hospital. His condition is unknown.

A man told police he saw 3 to 4 people breaking into cars in the 11000 block of Melvin Place in New Orleans East.

NOPD are investigating a shooting that happened on 7100 block of Downman Road.

Sunday

4 shot, 1 male dead

The NOPD is investigating a quadruple shooting that claimed the life of one adult male and injured three others in the First District.

On Sunday June 14, around 6:59 p.m., officers in Mid-City responded to an aggravated battery by shooting in the 600 block of South Lopez Street. When officers got there, they found four adult males suffering from gunshot wounds.

The first victim was pronounced dead on the scene by EMS. The other three victims were taken to the hospital by EMS. One of the victims is listed in critical condition and the other two victims are listed in stable condition.

Also on Sunday, NOPD are working a separate fatal that happened at North Claiborne Avenue and Columbus Street. One man was pronounced dead by EMS and another man was taken to a hospital by a private vehicle.

It happened in the 2000 block of Egania Street in the Lower 9th Ward.

NOPD are investigating what led to a man being shot in the 8900 block of Morrison Road in New Orleans East. No details of the man’s condition at this time.

Sunday’s quadruple shooting came as NOPD Superintendent Shaun Ferguson marched peacefully with community members in an effort to strengthen the community’s relationship with the police.
