2nd spillway opening in weeks will be closely watched

UPDATE: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced they will open the spillway today.

The Army Corps of Engineers expects to open the Bonnet Carre spillway again next week. The unprecedented second opening in the same year has environmental watchdogs concerned.

It's not like the spillway's never been opened before, but still, Dr. John Lopez of the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation says they don't know what will happen.

"As an individual event, it's not that different, but we are worried about these openings kind of stacking up," said Lopez. "The effects may overlap and start to have, you know, different kinds of effects than we've seen from s single event."

Dr. Lopez says people shouldn't be too quick to point fingers at the spillway opening for dead dolphin in Mississippi Sound, but it's still a concern to have this much fresh water sent into the lake.

"We don't know. And we're certainly encouraging people to report anything to the proper officials anything unusual," said Lopez. "Dolphins, sea turtles."
