Badly decomposed human remains found under I-10 near Slidell are thought to be that of a man last seen in December 2017, authorities said today.

A state Department of Transportation and Development crew made the gruesome discovery Tuesday afternoon between Gause Boulevard and the I-10/I-12/I-59 interchange.

"Slidell Police believe the human remains belong to that of a missing man who disappeared in early December of 2017, Tony 'Tiger' Bennett," said Det. Daniel Seuzeneau in a release from Slidell Police. "Bennett was last seen at Motel 6 in Slidell on December 13, 2017, which is in the vicinity of the same area where the human remains were found."

Seuzeneau said that property found near the body led authorities to believe the remains were that of Bennett. DNA tests are being run to confirm the body's identity.

The sheriff's office says there was no immediate indication of foul play. The investigation is ongoing.
