(WWL.com) - When disaster strikes, the Cajun Navy is there to help.

The Cajun Navy 2016 has responded to the devastation left from tornadoes in south Alabama that killed at least 23.  Vice President of Cajun Navy 2016 Billy Bringear says they’ve got boots on the ground with chainsaws rescuing survivors from the mangled homes.

“There was a tornado that came through then one followed right behind it down the same path so you can imagine the kind of destruction it did.”

Cajun Navy 2016 responders from Baton Rouge are in Lee County, which saw the heaviest impact from the tornado outbreak. Bringear says efforts like this cost money, and any contributions people from Louisiana want to make to help can be done on the Cajun Navy 2016 Facebook page.

“This stuff costs money and we do mostly pay for it out of our own pockets but we do take donations.”

Bringear says it is an easy decision to help in times when others lose everything, which is relatable to many in Louisiana.

“I personally was in Katrina, we have done hurricane Harvey in Houston and spent a lot of time there. Hurricane Michael in Florida, [Florence] the hurricane in South Carolina, my house flooded in 2016 and I know how people feel.”
