The New Orleans City Council is moving ahead with its plans to investigate the Hard Rock collapse. Council leader say that despite what the mayor of New Orleans and the New Orleans Office of Inspector General say, they do it without interfering with other agencies' investigations.
The unanimous vote sets the council on a path to hold more hearing and ask more questions of people they hope will have answers about the collapse.
Council president Helena Moreno said the committee will dive deep into many related topics "such as response, safety, cost to the city, impact to residents and local businesses, along with providing necessary updates and public engagement."
Moreno says they aren't doing this for the cameras.
"If you are looking for a show, you are have come to the wrong place," she said. "But if you are looking for a venue for productive dialog on topics related to the Hard Rock collapse, this is where you'll find it."
Council vice president Jason Williams says their investigation is necessary for things that fall under their jurisdiction.
"This committee will take facts and in turn, endeavor to make good public policy," said Williams. "That may result in legislation or appropriations where necessary to help safeguard the people of this city."
Mayor LaToya Cantrell opposes the council's investigation and has said her administration will not participate in hearings.
