New Orleans Police shot and killed a man Friday night in what authorities say appears to be a suicide by cop.
NOPD Chief Michael Harrison described it as an "attempted suicide call in the 2300 block of Orleans Avenue."
He says police responded to the call after 10:00pm.
"A subject fired at one of our officers," Chief Harrison said. "Four of our officers... fired."
He says the officer was struck "in the middle of the (bullet proof) vest"
"Our officer is in good condition... and good spirits," Harrison told reporters in a late night news conference with the mayor. "The suspect has expired."
He said that further details would be forthcoming and that the independent police monitor was notified.
"There were multiple body cameras," Harrison explained in saying that the video will be released.
Mayor LaToya Cantrell added, "This is a very serious matter."
She explained that the officer was shot twice in the vest.
"That vest, it saved his life," Cantrell said.
