The opening of schools in Jefferson Parish has been pushed back to a later date.

Concerns over the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus caused the board to unanimously vote delay the opening of school.

A number of teachers and parents addressed the board this evening voicing their concerns about COVID-19 and the fears of exposing their kids to the infection in a classroom.

The board did not set a new date for the opening of schools.

The head of the teachers union said the delay is a good first step, but there is still uncertainty about the start of school and what measures will work to protect kids from catching the infection.

The Board will release more information on the delay on Monday.
