The 32-year-old man accused of crashing into pedestrians and cyclists over two blocks of Esplanade Ave. Saturday night appeared in court Thursday.
Two people were killed and seven others injured in the suspected drunk driving incident.
Tashonty Toney, the son of a New Orleans police officer, has hired prominent criminal defense attorney, Ralph Whalen, to represent him in court.
Whalen said Thursday it was too early to make a public statement.
Toney tried to run away after the crash but was chased down by witnesses and arrested a short distance from the scene.
His sentence may well be influenced by the pending results of a blood alcohol content test.
Jail terms could range from a minimum three years per event to five years per event for BACs of .08 to .15. If Toney's BAC was over .15, he could be convicted for a crime of violence
Each sentence would be consecutive.
Toney remains jailed on a $510,000 bond.
