The New Orleans Police Department is asking for help finding a driver and vehicle that hit a police officer Sunday afternoon.
Shortly after 12:30 p.m., officers were checking out suspicious activity at a Shell station in the 3400 block of Franklin Ave. Police say as officers approached, the driver of a black Infiniti FX3 (pictured) backed into a parked car.
"As one of the NOPD officers opened the driver’s door of his marked NOPD unit to exit and approach the vehicle, the vehicle accelerated at a high rate of speed towards the officer," police said. "The vehicle struck the marked unit’s door, injuring the officer, and also struck another officers marked police unit before fleeing the scene. The injured officer was treated for his injuries."
Police described the driver as a black man in his early 20s with a beard and wearing a white t-shirt.
Police say anyone who has information should call Third District detectives at (504) 658-6030, or Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111 or toll free at (877) 903-7867 (STOP). Callers to Crimestoppers do not have to leave their names and may be eligible for a cash reward.
