The super krewe of Endymion says officials are "heartbroken" over the fatal accident that took the life of a parade goer Saturday night. Leaders expressed their "deepest and heartfelt sympathies" to the victim and his family.
In a news conference today Endymion called on the city to create a safety taskforce to review what can be done to prevent future tragedies.
Officials with the krewe said they do not believe the fact that it was a tandem float contributed to the victim falling under a float, getting run over and killed.
"We don't think that was the set of circumstances that you had last night," Endymion Vice President Charles Bruno. "The gentleman may have tripped, he may have fallen, he may have been pushed."
The city has banned the use of tandem floats after the second death of the season. Police say a woman in the Nyx parade Wednesday night walked in between two floats in a tandem, was run over and killed.
That new policy has Endymion saying they cannot run the parade again.
Krewe President Dan Kelly announced that due to the temporary order banning tandem floats, there is no way they can reschedule the parade that was canceled after float 13.
"The Kerns don't have enough tractors to go around," Kelly explained, "There is no way that we would be able to do it."
