Edwards: Too many gathered for Easter weekend, also closes schools for rest of academic year

Governor John Bel Edwards

Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards today says it appears a lot of Louisianans did not follow social distancing guidelines over Easter weekend."I've received reports that the people of Louisiana over the Easter weekend did not take social distancing as seriously as they should have," the governor said.Citing cell phone tracking data, the governor said Louisiana's overall grade fell."The Unacast Social Distancing dashboard, which tracks movement by cell phone GPS data, the state actually wasn't doing that well before, we had a C-, but we now have a D," the governor said. "There are too many people moving around."The governor said Louisianans need to get back to practicing the mitigation records, because the latest case reports show growth in cases has slowed. Those reports usually lag a few days behind actual circumstances.

Edwards also said he is preparing to order public schools to remain closed for the rest of the academic year.

Today's COVID-19 briefing came after Edwards toured tornado damage in the northeast part of the state.

"There were two tornadoes with an aproximate two mile storm track," the governor said following a survey of the Monroe area.

After seeing flattened homes and businesses over a wide area, he expected search teams to report tragic news.

"When you see how significant the damage was, how widespread it was, the fact that they are reporting here in Ouachita Parish three minor injuries and no fatalitis and no serious injuries is a miricle."

There were five other areas of Louisiana that saw confirmed or suspected tornadoes.
