Health officials say Lake Pontchartrain is safe for swimming

The Louisiana Department of Health says recent testing of Lake Pontchartrain shows blue-green algae levels have dropped to a point where it's no longer considered toxic.

"In June, health officials warned swimmers and other users of Lake Pontchartrain that toxins associated with the algal bloom can cause gastrointestinal symptoms, skin irritation and/or breathing problems," LDH said. "Today, measurements of this toxin are within acceptable limits."

The health department says if the presence of blue-green algae is visible, people and their pets should avoid the water.

The algal blooms were the result of the nutrient-rich Mississippi River water that had been pouring into the lake for weeks from the Bonnet Carre spillway. Northshore authorities had to warn people not to go into or eat seafood caught from the lake during that time.

Algal blooms spread all the way into Mississippi Sound, leading to the closing of Mississippi Gulf Coast beaches.
