Louisiana's medical marijuana patients will not be allowed to inhale cannabis.
Baton Rouge Democratic Rep. Ted James had sponsored a bill to let therapeutic marijuana patients use an inhaler, just as asthma patients do. Republican Sen. Fred Mills of St. Martin Parish said the change would not allow vaping of medical cannabis. But, Sen. Dan Claitor, a Baton Rouge Republican, said he was uncomfortable with the bill because its language wasn't tight enough.
Senators killed the bill after voting 21-14 Saturday to strike the language from a regulatory bill involving the medical marijuana program.
The House had already overwhelmingly agreed to the inhalation measure. Patients do not yet have access to medicinal-grade pot in Louisiana. Disagreements about its regulation have slowed the process of putting the product on the shelves, but it may be available later in June.
