Jefferson Parish government and businesses will open up under the phase one guidelines as recommended by the Louisiana Governor's office starting this Friday. Leaders urge people to proceed with caution.
"We're going to proceed carefully and responsibly into phase one," said Jefferson Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng.
Sheng said it took several weeks of obeying the stay-at-home order to get to the point where Louisiana could test the waters of phase one of the White House recommendations for reopening the economy. And she said the rules for phase one need to be adhered to as well.
"It is critical that everyone believes that they have a responsibility for this and our community to keep the transmission of this virus low," said Sheng. "If we ever want to envision a day of getting into phase two, it's because everyone acts responsibly."
Churches, restaurants, gyms, casinos and salons are among the businesses that can reopen Friday at 25 percent capacity. Among the businesses that must remain closed under phase one are bars that don't serve food, tattoo shops, spas and interior stores at malls.
