Ligament damage could mean playing time lost for Drew Brees

How significant is the injury to Drew Brees throwing hand?  It does look like "number 9" is going to miss some playing time.

Brees apparently suffered some trauma to his hand when his thumb hit the Rams Aaron Donald.

What appears to be ligament damage would mean some time on the sidelines for Brees.  Dr. Christopher Marrero, Associate Professor, Department of Orthopedics at LSU New Orleans explains ligament damage.

"Ligament damage is either stretching or tearing of a ligament," Marrero said.  "Now a ligament attaches bone to bone, and in this particular case, it holds a joint in place."

Obviously a tear is much worse.

A tear, obviously is completely disrupted and that in high performance athletes would require surgery," Marrero said.

And that could mean 6 weeks maybe longer.  Dr. Marrero says based on the exam given on the sideline that we saw on TV it does appear to be ligament damage.
