Lopinto: Don't drive on flooded streets and risk pushing water into homes

Sheriff Joe Lopinto is warning residents not to drive on flooded streets this weekend.  The Sheriff suggests waiting it out before you possibly push water into neighborhood homes and businesses.

"We have to use common sense, pull over on the side of the road, find a place to go inside for an hour, let the rain subside, let the streets drain out before you drive," said Lopinto.

He adds the sheriff's office doesn't operate on drones and neither does The Parish Works Department.

"We have to get throught the same traffic as everyone else," he said.  "And driving through the water puts your car at risk and puts the risk of you pushing water into somebody else's home."

Lopinto adds while they will try to block off roadways when roads flood, the parish is large and there are not enough barricades to cover all areas.

"There is an ordinance in place that allows us to ticket," said Lopinto.  "Let's face it, we have 430 thousand residents and we maybe have 50 officers on the street at a time to be able to issue them a ticket at this point."

Again Lopinto reiterates that common sense is key.
