On the 14th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina’s landfall, the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness activates its Crisis Action Team to monitor Hurricane Dorian. While a Florida landfall is expected, GOHSEP spokesperson Mike Steele says the activation comes as the storm’s exact track is uncertain.
“That allows us to kind of open up the communication channels with our local emergency manager-partners to make sure they have the resources they need, should this situation become a little more dangerous here in Louisiana,” said Steele.
Steele says even if Dorian has no impact on the state, it’s an important reminder to everyone to be vigilant.
“There is still a chance that other threats could develop over the next several weeks, so we are asking everyone to recheck your supplies, think about your evacuation plans,” said Steele.
Steele says historically Louisiana has stepped up to help to other states.
“Governor Edwards has made a point of making sure that we’re ready to offer support to other states when needed. That can range from recovery efforts to communication efforts to any help that may be needed,” said Steele.
