The New Orleans Fire Department says a man is dead after an accident at the dump.

NOFD was dispatched to the 9300 block of Almonaster Ave to perform search and rescue operations.

It followed "a member of a landfill contractor crew presumed to have fallen into the landfill."

Captain Edwin Holmes said that six NOFD units carrying thirteen Special Operations personnel responded to the Gentilly Landfill.

He says crews explained that workers had stopped operations a “spotter” for one of the bulldozer drivers was unaccounted for.

"After locating what was thought to be a flag belonging to the victim responders barricaded the area and began a search pattern involving digging by hand through the dumpsite," Holmes said.

A short time later a coworker assisting with the search effort found the 52-year-old man.

"New Orleans Emergency Medical Services personnel pronounced the victim as deceased while still on the scene."

He said that the New Orleans Police Department is currently conducting the investigation of this incident.
