The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office says some of its deputies were ambushed while on a domestic violence call Monday night.
"Shortly after 7:15 p.m., STPSO deputies were dispatched to a residence in the 100 block of Eden Isles Boulevard near Slidell in response to a domestic violence complaint," according to the sheriff's office's statement.
"While speaking with one of the involved parties in the driveway of the home, a second individual came around the side of the residence armed with a firearm," the sheriff's office continued. "He immediately began firing upon the responding deputies, who returned fire."
Authorities say the man withdrew to the side of the residence where he fatally shot himself in the head.
One deputy received minor injuries from flying glass. Two sheriff's office vehicles were damaged by gunfire.
The sheriff's office says the investigation is ongoing.
