A dollar in Louisiana is not worth a dollar

How much is a dollar worth? One dollar, right? According to a recent survey, it actually gets you a little more in Louisiana.

According to 24/7 Wall Street, one dollar actually gets you a $1.11 in Louisiana. 24/7 Wall Street Editor in Chief Douglas McIntyre says it's just a way to illustrate Louisiana's lower cost of living.

"Louisiana's household income is low compared to other states, but so is the cost of living," McIntyre said. "You have one state where the costs of living is significantly lower than the other so what a dollar buys, there's a difference between those states even though the amount people earn is relatively the same."

Louisiana comes in tenth for states where a dollar gets the most. Number one is  Mississippi, where a dollar gets you $1.16. But Mississippi also has a per capita income of $37,994, compared to Louisiana's $45,542.

Hawaii gets the worst value for its dollar -- just 84 cents. Per capita income comes in at $54,565.

Connecticut has the highest per capita income in the survey, $74,561. But a dollar there only buys $0.92 worth.
