(CBS News) -- Two sources tell CBS News Chief Washington Correspondent Major Garrett that Special Counsel Robert Mueller could turn his report over to the attorney general as early as tomorrow, Friday, February 22.

What happens after that is uncertain. It is up to Attorney General Bill Barr to decide what to release to Congress and the public and when to do it. Some Democrats in Congress have said they could subpoena report if they believe the attorney general is not sharing enough information with the public.

Mueller's investigation began in May 2017 when deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein appointed him to look into "any links and/or coordination between the Russian government and individuals associated with" Donald Trump's presidential campaign. That appointment came after President Trump fired FBI director James Comey.

Since then, the probe has secured guilty pleas from former Trump associates including former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn and former Trump campaign official Paul Manafort. The investigation also led to the indictments of more than a dozen Russian nationals and three companies for attempts to manipulate the election, indictments of twelve Russian intelligence operatives for hacking the Democratic National Committee's email, and the indictment of Trump confidant Roger Stone.
