The shooting death of a woman in Mid City while she and her husband tried to stop a suspect from stealing their car is another example of recent crime committed by teenagers. While overall crime is down in New Orleans, members of the city council say increases in things like auto burglary and juvenile crime are trends that the city needs to get out ahead of.
Councilman Jason Williams says they are working on making sure services are there for families that need help with their adolescent members. New curfew hours are also being formulated, and the city is set to revamp juvenile detention.
"All of these things will allow us to meet children where they are and make sure that they don't find themselves checking cars at 7 o'clock, or out at ten, eleven o'clock at night," said Williams.
"Please know that this council is not only talking about this issue but working on this issue," Williams said, "to make sure that we are giving young people a place to be, giving young people a purpose, and giving them consequences when necessary."
