New Orleans City Councilman Jay Banks has suggested banning the NOPD from using tear gas.

During today's city council meeting many of the scores of public comments were highly critical of the decision to use tear gas on the protesters on the Crescent City Connection Wednesday night.

He was among councilmembers that said during the meeting that they wanted more information on what happened on the bridge.

"I do not yet have the information," he said in the NOLA.com interview. "I will never stand for the abuse of power anywhere. And I am waiting to get the information as to exactly what happened last night, and then we’ll figure out where the fault and blame lies."

According to the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, tear tear gas is banned for use in war.

However, the publication says that it is legal for police to use as it falls within a substantial exception to the global prohibition against chemical weapons enshrined in the Chemical Weapons Convention.
