Federal authorities say a Covington man is headed for a year in prison for illegally possessing and making silencers for guns.
"U.S. Attorney Peter G. Strasser announced that ROBERT LYONS, age 34, of Covington, was sentenced for federal firearms violations," according to a news release.
Court record show that Lyons had firearm silencers that were not registered to him in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record.
"Lyons also made firearm silencers without obtaining prior approval from the federal government or paying the requisite tax."
U.S. District Judge Jane Triche Milazzo sentenced him to a year and a day in federal prison. Lyons then faces two years of supervised release.
"This case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN). PSN is the centerpiece of the Department of Justice’s violent crime reduction efforts."
