Officials: Stop all gatherings to slow spread of coronavirus

After the President of the United States announced there should be no gatherings of groups of more than ten people anywhere in America until further notice, local officials also adapted their message on coronavirus too.

"All public and private gatherings shall be canceled or prohibited in non-emergency situations," New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell announced.

Other than families in their own homes, the mayor said people should not gather together.

The mayor says that does not apply to essential services like hospitals, other health care facilities, pharmacies, grocery stores, banks and gas stations.

City Health Director Dr. Jennifer Avegno insisted New Orleans is getting hit harder than maybe any other city in the United States.

"We continue to be, and are increasingly very concerned by the number of cases of COVID-19 that we are seeing here in New Orleans," she explained. "There is substantial community spread, that has already resulted in two deaths."

Avegno says they are not seeing the virus spread at the same rate elsewhere in America.

"It continues to appear that the rate of infection here is increasing much faster than even other cities here in the U.S."
