The hurricane season has dug deeper into the alphabet, with tropical storms Paulette and René now in the Atlantic Ocean.

René could become a hurricane by Thursday morning, but by then it will be no threat to any land. The storm has already moved west of the Cape Verde Islands and is expected to steer north into the open ocean.

The National Hurricane Center is also watching a tropical wave off the U.S. east coast with 40 percent chance of tropical cyclone formation over the next five days. It could bring rain to the Carolinas by week's end.

A wave is forecast to come off the coast of Africa in the next few days, with a high chance of development into a storm, and is expected to move generally westward over the tropical Atlantic.
