Two people died and seven people were injured in the hit-and-run on Esplanade Avenue Saturday night. Now, many people are expressing outrage about what is being called a senseless act.
Tashonty Toney, age 32, is accused of running down cyclists at high speed in his Camaro and then trying to run away from the scene.
Legal analyst and Loyola Professor Dane Ciolino says a sentence of between five and thirty years is possible, with two counts of vehicular homicide being the most serious.
What about the fact that Toney is the son of a New Orleans police officer?
''Too many people are going to be watching this, there is no way he's going to get any kind of favoritism whatsoever and it's probably going to make it worse for him,'' said Ciolino.
Ciolino says he doesn't expect any leniency even though Toney reportedly told police that he has a problem with alcohol.
''It certainly shows he understood what he did was wrong, so he's not going to have any kind of temporary insanity defense by not knowing the difference between right and wrong,'' Ciolino said.
Bond for Toney was set at $310,000. The probe continues.
