The appointment of Shaun Ferguson as the new Police Superintendent for New Orleans is for the most part being praised by city officials and the president of the New Orleans Metropolitan Crime Commission.

Since Ferguson ran the NOPD training academy, it should give him a keen insight into officers he had to let go and those he hired on merit.

''The department can quickly settle in to the new administration and transition seamlessly, without distraction,'' said Goyeneche.

In picking Ferguson, Cantrell breaks with a longstanding local tradition of convening a search committee or appointing a chief on an interim basis to give them time t  meet with community members.
