Sen. Cassidy: Virus won't be stopped by April 30th

Despite Governor John Bel Edwards and President Trump’s unprecedented efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19, Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy tells WWL First News, he thinks the President’s social distancing guidelines and restrictions to fight the virus will extend past April.

“I think it really depends on what happens,” said Senator Cassidy. “I mean if we are able to flatten the curve now, and come up with some sort-of therapy, then we will have a different path forward than if none of these therapies work out and people do not effectively socially distance.”He says there are too many variables in this crisis to determine a clear outcome by the end of the month. “Ideally it all goes right and things work out but frankly, April 30th, I would suspect that is going to slide but that is my opinion,” said Cassidy.

He stressed the importance of people staying at home. Cassidy says practicing social distancing is the same effort as Americans joining the Armed Forces during a time of war.

“In this case the enemy is unseen, it is a virus,” said Cassidy. “But it will kill two million Americans if we don’t obey. Now in public health crises, you have a different set of circumstances and I think people have to recognize that,” said Cassidy.
