Today will be a little warmer and humid with rain chances up as southerly winds pump in Gulf Moisture over the area.
"It will be mostly cloudy with scattered showers and thunderstorms this afternoon," said WWL-TV meteorolgist Dave Nussbaum. "These storms are not going to be severe. High temperatures will be around 80. The record is 81 set back in 1974."
More scattered rain showers and a few storms are expected tonight. Mild and muggy, too, with lows around 70.
Look for some significant severe weather on Saturday.
"A cold front will move into the area during the morning with a line of severe thunderstorms," Nussbaum stated. "These storms will be capable of producing 60-70 mph damaging winds, tornadoes, large hail and heavy rain."
There is the possibility that any storm that develops ahead of the line will have the chance to produce a tornado. The Storm Prediction Center has placed all of SE Louisiana in an Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5) with the highest chance for significant severe weather from New Orleans northward into southern Mississippi.
A Significant #severe weather event remains in the forecast for Saturday morning between 9 AM and 1 PM. Expect d storms to produce damaging winds of 60-75 mph, a few tornadoes - some strong, large hail and heavy rain. Stay weather aware tomorrow! #lawx #BeOn4 @WWLTV pic.twitter.com/6fcxIih3Ti
— Dave Nussbaum WWL-TV (@Dave_Nussbaum) January 10, 2020"The Northshore looks to have the better chance for tornadoes, but I can't rule out a few on the Southshore," Nussbaum warned.
It will be a warm and humid morning with temperatures in the 70s, but they will fall to the 60s in the afternoon after the cold front passes through.
Timing: as of this morning, the storms are expected to enter the Baton Rouge area around 9 AM, Hammond area around 9-10 AM, New Orleans around 10-11 AM and Gulfport around 1 PM.
Sunday turns partly cloudy and cooler with high temperatures in the mid 60s.
National Championship Game Forecast: Monday will be gloomy day as the old front retreats back north as a warm front. We will be mostly cloudy with scattered showers and a few thunderstorms. Unfortunately, this means tailgating before the game could be pretty soggy. At least the game is played in the Superdome, so rain will not be a problem. Geaux LSU Tigers!!
